An Evening with Dave Hall, Accompanied by the Pianoshimo String Quartet

Please join us for an intimate evening of music as singer/composer Dave Hall unveils his new song cycle “Songs of Boyhood,” poems about walking on rails, climbing on rocks and talking to girls. Set for voice and strings, the work evokes memories of innocence and discovery as it celebrates the peculiar wisdom of adulthood.

DAVE HALL

Dave Hall is a singer/composer who writes in a variety of styles from country and rock to musical theater and chamber music. A graduate of The Manhattan School of Music, he is known for his lyrics as well as his music. The New York Times, noting his “well-crafted compositions,” called him “an artist of considerable lyrical clout.” He’s released several recordings of original songs and has performed in New York at such places as The Bottom Line, Joe’s Pub and the Celebrate Brooklyn concert series. He’s a composer of incidental music for off-Broadway plays, most recently “Voices From Guantanamo,” and has composed music and lyrics for a number of children’s musicals, including “Angela’s Flying Bed,” which was produced as part of the New York International Fringe Festival. “Songs of Boyhood” marks Dave’s return to writing for voice and string quartet. www.rowhousemusic.com

PIANOSHIMO STRING QUARTET

Ji Young Kim, Violin

Jiyoung Kim is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in Violin performance with Nicholas Mann at Manhattan Music school of Music. While she was studying with Kyungsun lee and David Bowlin at Oberlin Conservatory of Music, she was recipient of the Conservatory Deans Scholarship. She has participated in numerous festivals including Aspen, Green Mountain Chamber music, and Orford. Currently, she is the recipient of the school scholarship from Manhattan School of Music.

Joy Rhee, Violin

Violinist Joy Rhee was born in Korea but grew up in England and America. As a soloist, Ms. Rhee has had performances in concert halls such as Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall, and Merkin Concert Hall numerous times. As a chamber musician, Ms. Rhee has received coaching from members of the American String Quartet, Dr. Heasook Rhee, Valeri Avramenko, and Andrezej Grabiec to name a few. Ms. Rhee also enjoys orchestral playing and has participated in the Orpheus Institute, and has worked with conductors such as Kurt Masur, Philippe Entremont, Sidney Harth, Philip Mann, Joana Carneiro, and Paul Gemignani. Ms. Rhee received her BM from the Manhattan School of Music and is currently in the first year of the MM Degree at the Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of Grigory Kalinovsky.

Seulki Elise Han, Viola

Shortly after starting viola at the age of 12, Seulki Elise Han moved to the United States and continued her training as a musician under Dr. Amy Muchnick at Missouri State University. As an active chamber and orchestral musician, Seulki has worked with members of the Cleveland, Biava, and Tokyo String quartets, and has received both Bachelor of Music Degree and Performer Diploma from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, studying with renowned violist Atar Arad. Seulki has also participated in festivals including the Heifetz International Music Festival, the Innsbrook Institute of Music, and Indiana University Summer Festivals. Seulki is a recipient of the Manhattan School of Music Scholarship and is pursuing a Master of Music degree at MSM under Professor Robert Rinehart.

Benjamin Larsen, Cello

Cellist Benjamin Larsen made his solo debut in 1999 at the Merryall Center for the Arts, where critic for the Danbury News Times, Frank Merkling, called him “remarkably gifted”, with “a charming, warm tone.” He has performed in various venues in the New England area, including concerto performances with the Hartford Symphony, Farmington Valley Symphony and Musica Dolce Ensemble, and solo performances in England and Hong Kong. He is an avid chamber musician, having performed with the Enao Ensemble in chamber concerts to benefit the charity, the Bishop’s Fund for Children, for over a decade. He is the cellist and a founding member of the Lorelei Piano Trio, and a member of the Opus Nine Ensemble.
