James Biederman

Aaron Zulpo

A 2011 Guggenheim Fellow, Biederman studied sculpture at Yale University and the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. His polychromatic wall sculptures were included in Documenta 7 in Kassel, Germany. The Joan Mitchell Foundation, the Adolf Gottlieb Foundation,the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Rauschenberg Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts (1979 & 1982) have awarded his paintings and sculpture fellowships. James is involved with the growth of painting: how one structure becomes a foundation for another structure. How the relationship of things and colors inform the sense of thought and feeling.

John Weber Gallery, NYC, represented and exhibited Biederman’s wall sculpture, painting and drawing from 1979 to 1995. Winkelmann Gallery, Dusseldorf, Germany exhibited Biederman’s paintings from 1989 to 1995. Janet Kurnatowski Gallery, Brooklyn has representd his work since 2005. At the University of North Carolina at Pembroke he was the Martha Beach Endowed Chair of Painting from 2007-2012. Biederman’s work is in the collection of New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.; the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago; the Kroller-Mueller Museum in Otterlo, The Netherlands; the National Gallery of Australia in Sydney; and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and other public collections.
