Project: ARTspace is pleased to present Light Relay, curated by Alexandra Rojas, an exhibition of works by two photographers, Kyoko Hamaguchi and Tenesh Webber. Each artist uses the materials of photography: black and white paper, photo emulsion, and darkroom chemistry, in non- traditional ways, to create multi-layered abstract imagery. Hamaguchi creates objects that cross boundaries between photographs and sculptural objects, Webber makes photograms; camera-less black and white photographs.

The creation of matrixes is a key aspect of each artist’s work: Hamaguchi creates a pin hole camera that is processed in darkroom chemistry and becomes both a photograph and a sculptural object. Webber creates sculptural objects in the studio out of thread and woven paper, that are then printed in a black and white darkroom. Both artists reconsider how a photograph can be made. Hamaguchi “prints” her entire camera, Webber makes use of darkroom happenstance and incorporates these into her print-making process.

The balance between choice and chance is key to both Hamaguchi’s and Webbers work. They use chance-based practice as a formal artistic process, it is an integral part of their practice.  The use of light, photographic chemistry and the artist’s hand have added another dimension to the conversation around chance-based practice.
