Retrospective 1976–2016

Czech-born, New York City-based artist Pavel Kraus is presenting a retrospective of his works starting Wednesday, December 7, 2016, at Project: ARTspace, 156 Fifth Ave. Suite 308 in New York City. The expansive exhibition will feature paintings, sculptures, and installations, and will run through January 7, 2017

“Pavel Kraus’s career, extending over four decades, should be considered a journey toward truth in art,” wrote Art in America contributing editor David Ebony, who praised Kraus’s work as “imaginative expeditions that traverse great lengths of geographical distance as well as of time.”

“Richly diverse in terms of technique, materials, and thematic concerns, his adventure encompasses an exploration of abstraction and figuration in paintings, sculptures, installations, and collaborative theater pieces,” Ebony continued. “The enigmatic works he has produced reflect an esoteric examination of personal truths as well as universal veracity, which spans the ages from prehistory and antiquity to present day.”

As stated by Susan Moldenhauer, Director and Chief Curator at University of Wyoming Art Museum, of the exhibition“Pavel Kraus: Sex Death Offerings/Transfiguration”: “Kraus approaches art as a cultural archaeologist might explore a newly discovered excavation site, sifting through ideas about mythology, ritual, material, order, and contradiction to create his site-influenced installations.”

The exhibition will be accompanied by a full-color catalogue with an essay by Marek Bartelik.

Pavel Kraus received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and B.S. from Institute of Technology in Czech Republic. He has had major exhibitions internationally including The Czech Museum of Fine Arts, as well as gallery shows including OK Harris Gallery (NYC), Proposition Gallery (NYC) and University of Wyoming Art Museum.
